about

MINNOWAHAW consists of five works that stem from different corners of Leijten's practice. The a-side starts with the gamelan inspired piece Gammelaxarksky, a composition made from an improvisation with tenori-on and gamelan samples that explores non-western tunings and scales. The second piece is a psychedelic piece that was improvised as a score to a found 8mm film about a Thai vacation. The improvisation was influenced by the analysis of the images (using parameters such as brightness, colour, velocity, etc). With toy piano, eerie voices, tempo changes and the use of frantic polyrhythms, the piece ventures into spooky atmospheres and conjures powerful dreamlike images.

Flipping the tape the first track radiooscillating on the b-side is a slow and stretched-out collage piece that features a real-time processed recorder played by Verena Barie and sampled radiowaves. Follow up Play Sharp To Me is a wild improvisation with voice, tape deck, toy piano and supercollider that sizzles with electric tension. The album ends with Drowned World and features again Verena Barie on recorder. Taking the recorder to ear pearcing extremes - having the recordings heavily processed and mangled with audio programming environment supercollider, the work investigates micro-rhythms and textures and would be a fitting soundtrack to a digital exorcism.

Concerning the cover art, visual artist Joeri Lefèvre was invited to get inspired by the works and came up with the image of an indigenous mask shown from the inside, with a price-tag and signs of violence. The image carries the message that we should look at the insides of our masks, that we should make a psycho-analytic journey through our violent subconscious before we fly to Thailand as a careless, ignorant and seemingless innocent tourist.
